The MinRole feature does not just support small SharePoint farms. With MinRole you can also create medium and large SharePoint farms. The trick is to combine shared MinRole servers with dedicated servers to optimize the usage experience.

With SharePoint Server 2016, a new topology feature has been introduced in SharePoint on premises. This new feature is named MinRole. MinRole contains four server roles: Frontend, Application, Distributed Cache and Search.
